I could. But, whether or not I’d feel comfortable talking about what I like about myself, is a different story.
In today’s society, its “normal” to dislike yourself and feel insecure. Sometimes it seems like everyone is secretly hating on themselves. “Gosh! I am SO fat right now!” or “I’m such a wimp!” are all perfectly acceptable declarations to make in public. I actually say them sometimes. But for me to declare things I like about myself? “My smile is super pretty!” or “I really enjoy my sense of humor!”…well…that’d be weird.
1 Corinthians 13:6 says, “It (love) does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth…”
Love rejoices with the truth. It finds joy in authenticity. Jesus delights in the real you–work in progress and all.
The truth of our identities is found in Christ and what He says about us. Ever read the Bible? It’s overflowing with the Lord’s heart for us! He calls us strong and beautiful. He loves us and declares truth over us. Even in our weakness, He brings us up by calling out the good and prophesying growth. We are made new in Christ and have been given the fruits of the Spirit. Granted, some of them are a bit more hidden in our life than others, but Holy Spirit is working on our hearts and continuing to grow us in those areas.
“…that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.” ~ Ephesians 4:22-24
Why then, do we allow society to tell us it’s okay to put ourselves down? Why do we feel uncomfortable at the thought of actually letting other people know that we like ourselves (at least a little bit)? If love rejoices in the truth, why do I choose to agree with the lie that I’m a complete loser? Last time I checked, Jesus never called me a wimp. Jesus thinks I’m awesome!
So, ya know what? Here are three things I like about myself:
1) I like my willingness to try new things
2)I like my freckles
3) I like how I care about other people
