Fare Thee Well, Sweet Summer

Recently returned from my last camp of the summer! Goodness. It was incredible. I swam in a beautiful lake, drove a golf-cart for the first time EVER, and received some pretty legit war-wounds from a revolutionary game called “Ga Ga Ball” (no connection to the singer).

The week flew by much too quickly. Now, my suitcase is (almost) completely unpacked, and will soon be put away for a good while. goodbye-summerWhy? Because it’s nearly mid-August, and school will be starting .  Feeling bitter-sweet right now the summer draws to a close and the new season opens up. I’m eagerly awaiting my next adventure, but am also fondly clinging to the memories made within the past few months.

Yet this summer has contained so much more than pleasant memories! It’s been full of many opportunities and experiences that the Lord has used to teach me. As we begin the transition from summer to autumn, I’d like to share some of the “seeds” God planted within my heart this season.

* Love is not easy or glamorous. People will irritate and confuse and hurt you– but when you choose to look past their brokenness and call out the beauty that Christ sees in them, you are choosing love. Anyone can call out weakness. But to call out strength? That’s challenging.

“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”~ John 13:34

* Hard work and servanthood are, well, hard. But when we choose to press through and do our best, incredible things will happen.

* God doesn’t judge our accomplishments by how big or mighty they were. Instead, He measures our success by how well we stewarded what was given to us–no matter how small it seemed.

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much…” ~ Luke 16:10

*Apart from the Lord, I am completely and utterly helpless. But, instead of becoming angry or frustrated at my weakness, Christ delights in us acknowledging our need for Him and seeking after Him.

*Jesus is faithful and loving. He works all things together for good, and I can trust Him.

It took me a while to catch onto some of these key points, but Jesus has been faithful through it all. Guys (and gals!), this is just the beginning of the amazing journey we’re all on.  The Lord is not finished with any of us, but is gently calling us to come closer to Him and to love Him more and better each day. Looking back on this summer, I can see numerous instances where Christ was working “behind the scenes” in my life–I didn’t notice what He was doing, and sometimes  felt like He was ignoring me–but He was working in my heart, just the same.

What are some “seeds” the Lord planted in your heart this summer? When were some moments you felt God doing some major “behind the scenes” work?
