We’re Breaking Free!

leave comfort zoneAllow me to introduce you to a very good friend of mine. He’s safe, easy going, and always makes me feel good—his name is Comfort Zone. If I’m guessing correctly, you’ve probably already met Mr. Comfort Zone at some point or another in life. Isn’t it so easy to run into him? I mean, you never have to worry about facing struggles or failing. You don’t have to be concerned about confronting your fears. And you know for a fact, that when you’re in your comfort zone, you are in control. Seems pretty nice, doesn’t it?

But, there is a downside. Hiding in our comfort zone doesn’t encourage us to grow. It gives us a sense of false security in ourselves or in our situations. And, most of all, it keeps us from walking in the fullest that God has for us. Think about it… how many opportunities have passed by, because you didn’t step out?  And what about the opportunities that you have now? If you hadn’t been brave enough to leave your comfort zone, they would’ve passed by too .

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love, and of self-discipline.” ~ 1 Timothy 1:8

As someone who is extremely fond of her comfort zone, I can count several relationships, challenges, and opportunities I’ve missed out on because I was too scared to take a step of faith. (Please understand, when I say “comfort zone”, I mean that place where we stay and settle for being “okay” and half-hearted. ) Sure, we all like the idea of being passionate and fearless and ready to try new things—but, let’s be honest, change is scary! Trying new things, living passionately, walking in boldness—those are all a whole lot easier said than done. And they aren’t nearly as glamorous as we imagine them to be.

Then why bother stepping out of your comfort zone?

Because, it’s outside of our comfort zone that we learn to lean on Christ the most.  It’s in the hard, un-glamorous moments, that we truly realize our need for the Lord—and His desire to meet that need. And the more we understand our need for Him, the more we begin to pursue Him. And the more we pursue Him, the more we get to know Him. And the more we get to know Him, the more we become like Him—thus, reflecting and glorifying Christ on earth, which is one of our greatest callings! The opportunity to partner with Christ—talk about a glorious opportunity and relationship! Yet, if we allow ourselves to settle in our comfort zones, we’ll end up selling ourselves short. The Lord loves to meet us in our comfort zones—but He has so much more for us, if we’ll just take a step of faith.

“And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed in His likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” ~2 Corinthians 3:18

For the next few posts, I’d like to discuss some specific ways we can break free of comfort zones. In the meantime, however, what is an area you feel you’ve allowed yourself to become too comfortable in?

“The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”~Deuteronomy 31:8
